Psychology is diverse and rapidly changing. Students and faculty in our programs reflect this diversity and deal with changes by engaging together in discovery. With one of the largest psychology programs in the state, our B.A. and B.S. degrees prepare people for careers in health care, business, law and government, as well as for graduate study in every area of Psychology. Our Master of Science degree tracks in Industrial/Organizational and General/Experimental Psychology offer comprehensive master's-level training to prepare people for careers in private and public organizations and for private practice and consulting. The Experimental track prepares students for further study in Psychology at the doctoral level and/or for junior or community college teaching.

Psychology, as a profession, is an applied art in which psychologists use theories and technologies developed with the help of scientific experiments. Clinical psychologists attempt to help people with their problems in living. This involves such activities as psychological testing and assessment, the development of treatment plans and counseling and psychotherapy Industrial/Organizational psychologists work in business and industry They help organizations solve problems with human resources by designing and evaluating selection, training and development systems and by designing jobs in the workplace so that people are more satisfied and productive.

Most careers in psychology require training beyond the bachelor's degree. However, some of our bachelor's-level graduates have jobs as rehabilitation counselors, personnel managers, public relations directors, manager trainees, live-in counselors, recreation directors and data processing analysts. Majors in both the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees are available. Students also may minor in Psychology to accompany a major in another field.

The Psychology Undergraduate Advisement Center offers support services to psychology majors, Advisement staff assists majors in making decisions about educational choices. The coordinator, departmental advisor and faculty all serve as resources to students, offering information about how to get more involved, how to gain useful experiences and how to set academic and career goals.

The faculty represent many different theoretical orientations and areas of specialization. For the most part, Psychology students at Missouri State receive instruction from Ph.D-level teachers, even in lower-level courses, and student/faculty ratios for most courses are comparable to those of much smaller institutions. The department is able to offer students the breadth necessary to accommodate their personal goals and the quality necessary to accomplish those goals.
